Clutter

Tried cleaning my room (again. *sigh*). I so want to clean the entire house! There’s just too many “kalat”. My goodness! No one wants to throw away anything that means something.

We have loads of old clothes, towels, bedsheets, that they do not want to give away or throw. They say “I can still wear that” but never do.

Under the stairs is a small room filled with shoes, sandals, slippers that we rarely use anymore, excluding those outside in the balcony and in our respective rooms.

There’s an entire wall of bookshelves consisting of old academic books from Grade 1 to College of us all siblings, including photocopies of lectures in college, term papers, researches, case studies  and the likes, and board review materials. And there are 4 of us with bachelor’s degree! Imagine! Honestly, it’s already useless with Wikipedia and Google, not to mention that due to the rapid developments in science and technology, books are revised every 2 years. I've read somewhere that by the time you graduate, the things you studied in your first 2 years in college is already obsolete.

Beside that bookshelf is another bookshelf of expensive magazines (from National Geographic, astronomy, Discover, Reader’s Digest, to Seventeen and Cosmopolitan, to name a few) from way way beyond. We stopped buying when he had internet connection, maybe around 1999, I think.

Then there’s the case of bags, lots and lots of them, in different sizes, colors, and designs, plus pouches and wallets. Believe me, mom and my sisters will throw a fit if I throw any of it. I had already thrown away about 25 pcs of them plus some old shoes 3 yrs ago. I can still remember the smile of the garbage collector when I handed him the big plastic bags and told him that most of it are still in good condition.

And now with Nishreen and Nisha in the picture, you can see a bunch of colored pencils and crayons ANYWHERE in the house. Open any drawer or cabinet and you’ll see a whole set of them. Oh, there are pencils and erasers too!

Another thing that gives me headache because I, too, don’t want to give away or throw is the stuffed toys. Really, come and see for yourself. Mom had already kept in 1 really big plastic bag some of it but you can still see 3-5pcs of those in every corner of the house. My room already has 13, naira has 8. Not to mention old toys from cars to doll houses.

Then we have throw pillows. These are usually gifts from friends that no one in this house wants to throw. I’m counting 22. Haven’t checked the cabinets yet.

One more dilemma is the abundant souvenirs from birthdays (esp. debut), weddings, christening, that each member of my family has ever attended. I wouldn't want to throw mine and so are they.

Lastly, a whole bunch (2 boxes and counting) of pirated CDs/DVDs and...believe it or not...drumroll please...BETAMAX tapes and CASETTE TAPES. HAHAHA!!! There are some VHS too, and the player of course. And we still have 3 rewinders for those. The house is a clutter!

And now come jong, bringing with him his entire bunch of tools and tv’s, cd players, radios, electric fans, and well, of course, his clothes. Well, his tools alone can occupy a small room. If you didn’t know he’s a Medical Technologist, you’d probably think he’s a handyman or some sort of carpenter and electrician rolled into one. When I was in high school, my room was big enough for a party of 6-8 people. My friends and I celebrate birthdays in here. Now, I have no idea how to fit all of Jong’s, Jonnor, and my stuff in this cramped place. I wonder how we will fit our stuff in our own house.

I gotta get back to cleaning. Haayz.

  1. Garage sale is the answer. Pile everything in the garage...open the gate and post "garage sale" :-)but don't sell my betamax player. I still have some betamax I want to convert to digital format.

Do you know we have 4 Human Anatomy books from different authors, 2 histology, 4 pharmacology, 3 biochemistry (to name a few). Include mo pa laboratory manuals. And c mom, nagtapon nako sa labas ng 3 old shoes, nkta ko n nman d2 sa baba ng hagdan. pwede p daw magawa. hayz.

  3. I had the same experience, Nors.
